Style File: Fall Trends For Spring

In my book, spring has been officially delayed. Sure the rains have been here (for a while now) but with nary a 19-degree day in sight then I submit that spring in Melbourne has been officially delayed!
It has been a brutally cold winter, but with it comes the blessing of much needed rain so the good news is that officially the drought is over and it’s the first year (in 8 years of living here) that the drought is not front and center in the news.
But with the cold winter, my resolve and motivation has taken its own brutal beating and I need some inspiration to pep me up and help me get ready for some skin-baring fashion for spring and summer.
So in the spirit of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, here are some of the fall trends that I will definitely be taking into spring, and perhaps even beyond.
1. THE BLOUSE
The style to hide a multitude of muffin tops. Yes, folks, the blouse is back and what I mean by that is loose and lovely tops tucked into smart pants or a pencil-cut skirt, or gathered into a belt or just draped elegantly over skinny jeans.
In addition to romantic and retro, you can add flirty and edgy to the many blouse styles out today. You can’t go wrong, so shop ’til you drop.
2. BRILLIANT PRINTS
Even though I love my LBDs and my classically tailored skirts, suits and pants, a hint of colour has never been more appropriate than in this year’s strong showing of prints. In fact it’s more like a splash than a hint, from modern to retro to romantic, prints this spring are definitely in.
3. NUDE CLASSICS
This one takes me back. To the ’90s. When the world was much simpler for me. And totally open to possibilities.
There’s just something about whites, beiges and soft dove grays that speaks of calmness, subtlety, sophistication and tabula rasa. A blank canvas open to new opportunities and experiences. It’s the basics, hinting with a promise of the future — which hopefully will be warmer than today’s temperature!
4. GRUNGE GLAM
My interpretation of romance and rock chic combined. But to reinterpret it for spring, softer colours are the go replacing the dark leathers (jackets, boots, et al) that usually make this such a hit fall look. Still, pile on the accessories and let pearls and chains in glam colours and metals fall oh-so-chic-ly to totally rock this style.
5. UTILITARIAN
The new military, but of course softened and lightened up for spring! I’ve just checked my closet and I don’t have any khakis left except for a very cool pair of shorts I got last year — yikes! Time to stock up!
I have to confess, I started with buying that BB Dakota jacket (pictured at the top) scoring it quickly from shopbop.com because it’s one of their best sellers (and selling out fast so click on the photo and nab that piece).
So be quick, fall into spring and get shopping!

I love spring too, but it’s honestly been delayed here in Melbourne. Last night we had a nasty storm so today is cold again! Looking forward to wearing some spring fashion, hopefully soon…

And let’s not forget the return of the clog! I am however thankful they aren’t the big bulky black ones but in the neutral tones and still with some attention to detail along with the clog inspired sandal
Love this watercolour look too this season…if only the sun would shine….

Sorry Kaz, I’m not with you on this one. Mum used to get these all the time from Oz and I tried but now I realize why I wasn’t so much into them — I like my delicate heels. But I can wear wedges, and I’m glad they’re back too! =)
